Since 2009, ReachAnother has provided
life-saving surgery for more than 15,000 babies with spina bifida & hydrocephalus IN ETHIOPIA
ReachAnother provides capacity-building knowledge and technologies that have changed hearts and minds, and instilled compassion and competence into the conversation of how to address neural tube defects. Our success is rooted in our commitment to sustainable partnerships with local Ethiopian healthcare systems and hospital staff.
The Challenge
Ethiopia is the second most populous nation in Africa, and among the top three fastest growing economies in the world. Yet despite this positive outlook, the country is facing a tragic pediatric crisis with 44,000+ spina bifida and hydrocephalus pregnancies each year.
Spina bifida and hydrocephalus are neural tube defects (NTDs) caused by a lack of folic acid in the mother’s diet. These NTDs damage the spinal cord, brain and vital functions of the newly born and cause stillbirths, infant mortality and profound, life-long disability.
